I saw a boat rack that mounts to a receiver hitch a month or so ago. I do not know who made it, though it was a store bought unit. It was on a Mercedes convertible and he was hauling two plastic kayaks. Thinking back it was kinda odd looking setup.

With my truck that has no topper, I made a rear rack out of 2x4's and some angle iron and 1/4 inch bolts.

Here's how I did it. I have two vertical 2x4's with a 3 1/2 inch peice of angle iron attached to one end of each of the verticals. The angle iron slips under my bedlinner to keep the bottom of rack from moving around. To the other end of the vertical 2x4's, I attached another 2x4 as long as needed on the horizontal, tieing the two verticals together. On the bottom (near the angle iron) I placed another peice of 2x4 connecting the two verticals together for more stability and keep the rack from racking (no pun intended).

When I want to use the rack I open the tail gate slip the angle iron under the bedliner. Tie the top of the rack down to the holes for saftey chains that are in the bumper. This rack does not move at all, very solid.

cost 7 - 10 dollars.

one tip, I found when tieing the rack to the truck. Open the tail gate six inches or so and pull the rack to the tail gate tie your knots and then close the tailgate. The ropes are nice and tight, very little work.
