I'm not sure about cherry, but if I remember right a friend of mine told me that it's very hard to sand.

My wife wanted me to use teak also. I bought walnut at 4.59/bdft, so I priced teak while I was there, it was $23/bdft (OUCH). The salesman said they use it for boats because it'll last a thousand years in salt water (his words not mine).
