I can't comment of the Tern; however, I've been quite happy with the Chesapeake 17 I built last winter (from plans). Tracking and handling are both excellent. As for you question of footroom, the Chesapeake 17 has PLENTY. If you're looking for expedition/tripping capacity, it's great. For day paddling (and for my next boat)on relatively flat water, next time I'm going with a smaller volume boat such as the Chesapeake 17LT or the North Bay.

(Just to make your decision more difficult, I haven't heard anything negative about the Tern either :-) )
