Here's the fitting that I used, although it is about the same size as the plastic one you mentioned. If you're willing to build them yourself, they could easily be scaled down. I wouldn't go too much smaller, though -- the thick bungee that came with my Pygmy kit allowed for 2 loops to go through. If you plan to run deck lines as well as bungees, keep the fittings somewhat larger. Using a brass pin would also allow more room.
