I understand some people have a similar reaction to redwood. Whatever it is in these woods that makes them resistant to insects, rot and decay seems to affect some humans about as much as it does bugs and microbes.

You might consider using pine instead. It is a bit heavier wood, but if you use thinner strips (3/16 instead of 1/4 inch) you won't have a big weight gain in the boat.

Are you using red cedar or white cedar? The red is supposed to have more of these oils in it.
