I had the same thought, about a ridge on the underside of the hatch, or even better, on the recessed lip that the hatch rests on, with weather stripping on the opposite side. There is a 1/4" half round spline used for caning (chairs)that I thought would be perfect for this. I haven't tried this myself, as I haven't decided whether I want to put hatches in my Osprey yet (the trama of cutting through that beautiful deck...she said shuttering...).

I believe I saw this spline in Van Dykes Restorers Catalog. Let me know if you want me to look up the address.
