In the notes under Fig. 7-26 on p. 120, reference is made to epoxy-impregnated glass cloth, so I'm sure "gel coat" above on the page does not refer to polyester. An unfortunate choice of words, perhaps he meant thickened epoxy. Epoxy will stick to cured polyester, but there is no reason to use it here.
