If I had it to do over again I would start by stapling or using brads for a sacrificial strip just below the shear line. I'd use that as a brace or guide for my sheer strip and use the fixtures Nick shows in the book along with some hot glue. The hot glue won't hold alone (at least it wouldn't for me), so you will need to use the fixtures or some method of clamping until the glue dries.
