John, I bought a Yakima rack without locks for $60 about 4 years ago. It has been great for hauling bikes, skis, kayaks, lumber, furniture, and a mattress. It's for sale now since I bought a pickup and made a custom rack for the topper. I used 1 1/8" diameter bars for the frame so I can still use my Yakima accessories for it. I'd definitely recommend the Yak system. (I've never used Thule, but I've heard they're as good)
