4mm vs. 3mm decks

I wonder why they use 4mm decks. I used doorskins for my deck, and I haven't had any problems. Seems like staying with a 3mm deck would give you some decent weight savings while not costing you all that much, structurally. (The deckbeams take up most of the structural job)
