I put my footbraces in before installing the deck. It was much easier for me that way. The only problem came when I didn't allow quite enough room in front of the bulkhead for the seat. I hadn't realized how far ahead of the bulkhead the seat would have to go (the seat back tilts backwards a bit). This meant that the seat was farther in front of the bulkhead than planned and therefore my footbraces should have been a few centimetres ahead as well. It is fine for my short legs, but some of my taller friends would prefer the footbraces to be further forward.
