Sorry, my poor assumption.

Trying to fill in over existing strips is futile if you want it to look good, IMHO.
You will have an irregular glueline that you have to sand thru and the strips never matched well enough when I tried.

You may have to just leave it.

Square edged strips worked better for me - sorry to say "I told you so" when I never did!
