Joel,
I simply modify the upper portions of the frames that form the forward portions of the kayak by making the opening higher by 1,5 inches for the first and about 1.0 inches for the second, leaving the bottom of the kayak the same shape.
To reinforce where my heals sit, I put in pieces of the "plastic cardboard" that our local candidates like to use for their "vote for me" signs. It is readily available after the elections each year. These are not original ideas, but suggestions I obtained here on this forum or from other builders.
