Well yeah compressors do wear out, though they can usually be rebuilt. I used my 5 hp 2 stage Ingersol compressor in a commercial shop, ran nearly all day every day for almost 20 years though without needing rebuilt. Would have been better with a 7 1/2 hp one, but I had this one and it was paid for. A good quality machine with proper maintenance will last a really long time.

Yeah and using the air sander it ran nearly full time, they use a lot of air. It sat in a concrete block room with an insulated steel door vented to the outside, so the sound was ok, the sander on the other hand was and is noisy. I don't have a big enough compressor anymore to run it, but there will be a new shop in few years, will have one then.

Btw, one thing you can safely do with a pneumatic ROS that you can't safely do with and electric one is wet sanding. Nice when you're doing a bigger surface varnishing than a kayak. Wet sanding a 30' mahogany runabout by hand will take a VERY long time. And it takes lots of coats of varnish with wet sanding between each coat. Depends on what your time is worth.
