It's a short term problem John...right now the issue is that I have about 150 8' strips that need to get scarfed (I'm exaggerating but you get the point)...

Some builders scarf strips as they go, on the boat, but I'm with you on this...I prefer to work with full length strips.
BTW, don't forget that the strips will 'get shorter' as soon as you get past the turn of the bilge.
Also, you'll probably want to 'stagger' the scarf locations, though I don't think it makes any difference in strength in a (wood-core fiberglass) kayak.
