Once you have bulkheads in the boat you don't need floatation bags.

Most builders, and production boats use adjustable footrests like these ones from SeaLect.

It is of course much easier to install them before the deck goes on.

For my last three boats I have been using a minicell foam footpad inserted against the front bulkhead. It can be adjusted, although not while on the move at sea, by inserting a number of one inch pads behind it.

If the boat is only being used by one person, then once the fit is right they can just be left in place.

The reason I like the foot pad, is because one can keep foot pressure more central, and move the feet around more, which is nice on long voyages. Also, on low decked boats like Greenlanders, the feet can be more central, under the highest part of the deck. Nice for folks with big feet.

I also like to put a screw in hatch in the front bulkhead. This makes it easier to service footrests and get into the end of the cockpit by reaching in through the fore hatch. I prefer smaller cockpits though.
