I have used 19 inch spacings with no ill effects. The hunter was 18 inch spacings with 5mm strips and was also fine.

It is important to clamp between formers though if you are going for wide separations.

I would probably not go wider than around 18 inches though by choice.

I'm a committed stapler, except I use brads, and the main advantage for wider spacings it that I get fewer nail holes.
