Can you tell us more about the PL base for the skin?

Yes, this was a (ahem) discovery of mine a few years ago, likely brought on by smearing some on my clothes. It makes for a permanent waterproof skin coating that is extremely tough. Dirt cheap, dispensed with a caulking gun . . . spread it as thinly as possible across the fabric with a plastic scraper.

Pros - cheap, was readily available, won't ever crack, peel, abrade away or leak. It is very flexible, and long term immersion and washing machine tests did nothing to it. Seems to strengthen the fabric considerably. I have some test swatches - both polyester and nylon - from several years ago, and they are still going strong.

Cons - It has no UV resistance, so it must be overcoated. Spreading it thinly is not hard, but it is difficult to get a very smooth coating. And, my testing and usage was/is with the older style of PL premium polyurethane Construction Adhesive. This has since been replaced with another product - it's called the same thing, but comes in a differently colored tube and has slightly different labeling. I have not used this product . . . nor any of the new and similar offerings from other companies.

I typically use it to coat the lower part of the hull, but others have coated their whole boats with it. Again, it still needs a top coat of paint or varnish for UV resistance. I have probably used it with a dozen or more boats by now.
