Every boat builder should take the approach of using the materials at hand. This has to be balanced with the labor. I am building a boat now that is somewhat experimental and I started off using cheap and perhaps inferior wood as part of the experiment. But the work of tying hundreds of lashings and the hours that go into it quickly brings one back into reality as all mistakes - real or imagined - constantly stare you in the face as you work.
