In terms of speed thru flat water, overall length means pretty much nothing. Waterline length means everything. There are lots of kayaks with long overall lengths that are fairly slow because they have long pretty ends but a very short waterline length. Also some fairly fast short kayaks that have nearly plumb ends and very long waterline lengths for their overall length.

Long ended kayaks can be faster in rough water but that's a different conversation.
