Thanks for the replies. I didn't see your offer till I had already made the purchase.
I don't have any experience repairing fiberglass, but even I can see that the repairs could have been done with more care. Which is not to put him down, as the boat is still in usable condition. In fact he had used it on a weekend trip the weekend before I bought it.
I'll need to redo the repairs (or have someone else do it) at some point over the winter. As tempting as it is to have someone else do it, this is probably an ideal boat to try to learn on, as it's nearly 20 years old and has 3 patches already. It doesn't look too bad for all that, except for the patched areas (one in particular) where it appears that cloth was slapped over the hull fracture (above the water line, thankfully) and wetted out without any removal of the broken fibers. This seems to be a sub-optimal approach from what I've found reading this thread and researching it in other places. But $250 dollars for a fiberglass sea kayak (with paddle and spray skirt : ) in usable condition was too good to pass up....
