Skin-on-Frame: Latex Paint

A little over two years ago I posted about reskinning my Long Shot and using Latex paint for the first time. There was some interest and people asked me to post a follow up on how I liked it. Was searching for something and saw that thread and decided to follow up on.

I didn't like applying it, it was so thick it was hard to work with. I did thin the first coat and it soaked in the fabric better than thinned oil based paint. 2nd and 3rd coats were not thinned that much and I just found it harder to apply evenly. The finished product looked good though.

On the plus side it has held up very well. It's softer and the hull had a lot of marks on it. There were a couple of big spots on the sides that it was obvious that it was down to the fabric, bit it never appeared to seep any water or very minimal water if it did.

Oil based is just so much tougher and must less prone to marking, that after 2 years the oil based painted boats just look much better. So, while it works and I think is a viable alternative, I am sticking to good old porch and deck enamel.
