I teach middle school in north east Los Angeles about 20 car miles from the ocean. I show my students kayak videos I've shot to point out that the ocean really is part of our neighborhood. Middle school kids love to be negative. Sea lions and dolphins (the 360 degree pans of 50 dolphins stops the complainers 'not another boat video', my two blue whales video and shark tapping my rudder videos buy me almost a week of good behavior).
The majority of my students are Latino. One day a kid was capping on all the 'old white people' and their 'fancy' yachts in Marina del Rey, and I realized what the reality is, exactly as you point out: almost none of those boats go out, they are usually empty on the weekends. During the week crews of mostly Latino guys are working on them, taking breaks and eating lunch on the deck just like the rich people who bought them intended to do but don't. To us builders working on a boat is not even work.
God, I hope they fire me this week......or I win the lotto.... or they allow people to live in tents on the beach.....
