I must be having some good luck. Whenever I hit my "big" local independent contractor supplier (Curtis Lumber), there's always a good paddle blank available: 8-10' long, clear, vertical grain, western red cedar. $3 or so per linear foot ain't all that bad, either.

The cedar does tend to be a bit soft, though. The rocks in the Mohawk river tend to give it a nick here or there. Gonna try slapping some hardwood tips onto my next one.
