...cedar 4x4s. They have a couple of key advantages over 2x stock:

1- Because they're symmetric, you have double the chance of finding one with good grain orientation (vertical grain).

2- When resawn into 2 paddle blanks, the resulting blanks are thicker than 2x4s, which gives you more options for paddle dimensions and/or removing surface defects.

Like wide boards, they seem to be cut from larger, straighter trees.
