To save myself a long trip to a specialist woodyard when I need a small quantity of cedar I buy fence planks from a hardware store. They usually let me pick over the stack if I leave it tidy afterwards - the guy will often help if I tell him I'm building a boat.

I can use most of the planks - about 60% of a typical plank yields usable strips and the leftovers get used on stems and such. The bad planks end up on a fence . . .

The planks are only 6 feet long so I have to scarf more than with longer planks but I have jigs for cutting and gluing scarfs; some experienced builders advocate butt joining for strippers but I can't bring myself to do that. Sorry Bill - It's in my DNA . . .
