All my boats have one layer of glass on the inside and outside of the vertical riser (small strips of wood) wrapping under and onto the deck, and then once the lip is laminated and glued in place with thickened epoxy, I then run another layer of 4 oz. glass on top of the lip, down the inside and under the deck. For this I cut two strips of bias cut glass and also cut it in a slight arc. With the two pieces butted front and back, I have no trouble getting it to conform to the compound curve.

May be overkill, but I have to warranty my work.

Just to show you how strong it is, I am currently repairing a customers kayak that came off the roof of his car on a major highway. He was in an accident in which he rear ended another car. They exchanged info and then he drove off, unaware that the mounts for his roof racks had come loose from the impact. When he got home, his whole rack was gone, He drove back to find his stripper and his SOF still attached to the roof racks on the side of the highway. No one witnessed the kayaks flying off and he was very lucky not to have caused a major pile up. But all that was damaged was the coaming lip and the very tips of the kayak. A little sanding, some more epoxy and another layer of glass and know one will know. I cut off the ends of the kayak and attached blocks of hardwood with some more glass and resin. Looks like they were supposed to be there.
