I did a Yost coaming and glued the skin to the top and inside of the coaming base plate - wrapping it around to the underside where I stapled it while the glue set. It worked well, glued firmly and avoided staples in the mating surface between the upper and lower plates. Then remove the staples and trimed the loose skin from underneath. I did not attach the top lip to start with so I could drill bolt holes thru the top and bottom plates, then expanded the upper plate holes and put brass threaded inserts into the upper plate. This way I could now glue on the upper plate last and insert the bolts from the bottom, avoiding the appearance of the screws on the top. I did use SS bolts with round headed allen screw wrenching to avoid scraping myself on the bottom of the coaming. Did not epoxy the upper and lower plates, to allow for skin replacement later.

Have fun.

: So I am building a Morris style SOF and am starting to ponder the
: coaming. I have been looking at the yost style coaming with an
: attached base plate. My thinking is because I am a heavier
: paddler it might be a bit more secure. I was going to attach the
: base plate and brace it on the edges from the gunwhales. When
: skinning I would staple the skin to the top of the attached
: coaming and then poly it. After that is complete I will epoxy
: and brass screw the top plate and coaming lip. Anyone see
: problems with this?

: Thanks
