Something I have noticed using balsa for surfboards is that a lightweight wood may end up absorbing more resin and become closer in weight to heavier woods. Paulownia is the best wood for lightweight if you can afford it and if you can even find it. I am building a project with fir, and although it is a pain in the kazoo to work with, I am noticing it does not absorb much glue. I'm anxious to see how it does with the epoxy. Should be lightweight when all said and done.
