Dave,
I say go for it. Sometimes, ya just gotta know!

I was planning on laminating some cedar I cut for a Greenland paddle over the weekend but now you've got me thinking of using some leftover strips from my last boat and see what I can do on a birds mouth euro paddle.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing....
- oval shaft same as you..
- 210cm total length (for my 11 yr old). Maybe make a 230 for me while I'm at it.
- using Duane Strostaker's plans for a wood shaft paddle with a carbon fiber blade, add strips of cedar to the outside of the shaft adjacent to the blade to add some thickness to the side.
- generally follow Duane's plans for cutting out the blade curve, making and attaching the blade.
- considering covering the shaft with some leftover 3.2oz glass .. Maybe..

I'll take pics as well and we can compare notes on how they turn out
