Nylon fabric goes by an other name in the fibreglass industry and its call peel-ply. Boat builders have been known to wait for prom season to end and then buy up all the blue nylon taffeta they can from the dollar stage.

If you want to do it you need to use a 100% cotton fabric. I do this for my kite-surfing boards I make. Be careful with the fabrics as some tend to really colour bleach, even with U/V coatings on top. Not all colour dyes are equal. I had two new boards on top of the van on a recent trip to Cape Hatteras and after 15 hours in the sun, my wife's pink and yellow 70's flower power fabric was faded to grey, whereas my blue with gold dragon board didn't fade at all. Test any fabric you want to use first.
