Just to add fuel to the fire: on the last two boats I did the initial sanding/fairing with an angle sander and a soft pad designed for surfboard fairing, using 60-grit sticky-back paper before moving to a large ROS. Light pressure and frequent paper changes made all the difference. This is REALLY FAST. The boats were faired out in maybe a half hour. Like Rob says, however, every tool has its technique. I found the surfboard technique to be ideal for the initial sanding. I do check the final results, after the ROS, with a longboard but have found it doesn't seem to be really necessary.
