Yup, ballast is awesome. my 16.5' Aleut is quite tender empty, sits too high in the water. With a 100 pounds of gear in it it smooths right out and is rock solid and easy to roll.
If I am not camping I strap a 10L nylon water bag to the ribs. No weight to carry, I just fill it up at the put in. Best part is if I flood the boat the ballast doesn't add any weight since its the same density.
