Strip: cedar trees

I've built a couple of S&G kayaks and am thinking about this winters project, I'd like to build a couple of strip boats. I just cut down a couple of decent sized cedar trees and am going to mill them. I'm going to use a chainsaw to mill the logs down to planks (Alaskan saw mill) to finish into strips on my table saw. Has anyone else done this? My trees are Eastern Red Cedar, will this species of wood be OK to use? Even if it isn't the best wood to use I still plan to give it a try.
