: I've built a couple of S&G kayaks and am thinking about this
: winters project, I'd like to build a couple of strip boats. I
: just cut down a couple of decent sized cedar trees and am going
: to mill them. I'm going to use a chainsaw to mill the logs down
: to planks (Alaskan saw mill) to finish into strips on my table
: saw. Has anyone else done this? My trees are Eastern Red Cedar,
: will this species of wood be OK to use? Even if it isn't the
: best wood to use I still plan to give it a try.

My recollection from plant materials classes a half century ago is that the Eastern Red Cedar trees, which we have in abundance here on Cape Cod, are not cedars at all. They are actually a type of juniper known as juniperus virginiana. There wood is not only oily but also brittle. -Wes
