Well, I'd use dowels, not something smaller. 1/4" dowels are pretty small, get them at any big box lumber yard. Just cut to fairly short lengths, drill holes, cover with glue and insert, cut flush after the glue sets. I'd use Titebond btw, hard to get the moisture required for poly glue with dowels.
