It's getting too cold now for building (hovering around freezing) and I can't heat the garage well enough to work with Titebond 111 let alone epoxy, so I need an indoor project until it warms up. I have a grandson, and would like to build him a boat. I know I could do something quite quick in SOF or S&G but I would realy like to strip build it.
I don't seem to be able to find any plans for strip built kids' kayaks, so my thoughts were to reduce a Great Auk, then I can sit number crunching and drawing for a while, but as I have no experience or knowledge of this kind of alteration from design size, could all you "Old Hands" comment on stability and other criteria. I was considering a 3/4 x cross section, which gives an overall beam of 18" and a WL beam of 17.1". The OAL x 2/3 would be 11ft 4" or OAL x 3/5 would be 10ft 2". I'm still pondering this.
As he is still a little under 3yrs old it will initialy be too large anyway, (could I go even smaller?) but plenty of time for building and room for growth. It will probably end up as a hand me down which also seems like a nice idea.
