Hi Scott,
IMHO, belt sander is by far the more useful of the two.I have both but have seldom used the power planer as I find it more convenient and precise to use a hand plane. Also the belt sander can be used on it's side with a home built set up as a stationery sander to sand molds to the line after cutting them out with a band saw or jig saw. However, I personally, would not be using it for fairing the hull etc, that's where the ROS or fairing board excels.
Again, this is just my opinion.
