There are a couple of reasons the just allow the shape of the kayak to dictate the pattern. In other words to just keeping stripping normally but to include a different coloured strip or two.

The first reason is that it enhances the already beautiful lines of the kayak rather than distracting from them.

The second is that it takes no more time than stripping a plain deck and creates no more fiddly bits where any of the limitations of your woodworking skills will be displayed. :-)

You seem to be looking for something different, but I have seen some very beautiful kayaks built that way.
