In Response To: Material: waterproof cloth for a sea sock (john faas)

: I found out how difficult it is to empty a SOF of water even with
: very large float bags. So I need to make a sea sock.

: Since it is going inside of a F1 which has a combing with a small
: lip, I thought I would make the soak out of the thinnest
: material possible at least over the top of the combing and
: reinforce it around the wear areas.
: So here is the real question, can anyone point me towards a mail
: order/inter net source for cloth that might do the job?

: Thanks!

Seattle fabrics will likely have what you need. Or, you can just get "coated nylon" at most fabric stores, in a variety of colors. It's got some sort of waterproof coating on one side. I've made a few sea socks out of it. It is very thin and would be suitable for your coaming. I give it about a "D" though, for durability. The coating has worn/flaked off of mine in high wear spots - BUT it still works great as a sea sock. I just shouldn't leave it filled with water for more than an hour or so, as it would now leak out.

The "Masik" online newsletter at qajaqusa.org has instructions, in an older issue, for making your own sea sock.

Good luck!
Dave
