: Oak or ash ribs that are 1" x 1/4" finished are fine and
: there's no need to go thicker. When I mill my raw stock, I start
: out at 1 1/4" by 5/16", then machine it to final size
: after it dries. If you have the equipment to mill your own stock
: from logs, you can get wood inexpensively from firewood
: companies. Just ask for a log of whatever species and length you
: need.

Why do you suppose Cunningham uses a thicker, but narrower, rib? (3/8 x 7/8, thinned at bending areas to 5/16) He places a rib every 6" - is that standard?

I'm inclined to stick with the book's method, as its my first SOF; OTOH, I think your rib is lighter; OTOH, I already bought a very slick 5/16" router bit! Darn! I'm sure in the end it won't matter, either way will make a perfectly good boat. I tend to sweat the details when I'm new to something. I really want this one to be lightweight, however.....

Okay, the other thing he does differently is his skinning technique, using staples, and stitching along the sheer. Anyone care to comment on that? I've only seen the video on skinboats.org, as an alternative and, I assume, more typical method.

Thanks to all for your responses.
