I live in Rutland. I use the oak strips from Home depot/lowes simply because its easy to find and it works. The trick is to pick through the entire pile until you find 2-3 with the straightest grain of the bunch.
When do you intend to build? I'm building two Yost's this winter but have built a traditional ribbed kayak and a ribbed Wee Lassie canoe. I can let you look through Morris's book, but they are selling for about 150 a book, so I don't want to let someone I met off the internet to borrow it (no offense). I need to bend a coaming this winter and would be glad to have you visit and check out how its done.
