Good advice.

One trick that I used on my stained boats was to NOT bevel the shear joint between the deck and hall. Or, to put it another way do not sand/plane off the inside corners. This will leave a more open (wide) joint to be filled with thicken epoxy. This allows you to round the joint by sanding the epoxy and not getting into the wood/dye. You still have to careful and you cannot be aggresive with your sanding but it will allow you enough 'roundness' to allow the glass to lay up without air pockets.
