: Btw, the minicell foam blocks don't have to go to waste, with their

Yeah, I have never bought into the foam-block carrier approach. But I have some blocks I use for the sawhorse purpose.
Will N To Go's pool noodles approach is good, and you can also get inexpensive foam pipe insulation that works well.
I finally got a pair of nice cloth covered rack-pads from CLC that are durable and reasonably priced.

I like the Yakima bow-down J-cradles and use 2 of those. One other advantage of the J's is I think they leave a little more room.
I can put 2 kayaks in J-cradles, one on each side of my modestly sized VW Golf, and still have room to slide a SOF upside-down
in between. This creates the mildy amusing sight of a little car carrying 3 - 17 foot kayaks, and works well. And with a diesel
engine, I can still get close to 40 MPG on the hiway.

I agree that one disadvantage of the J's is solo boat loading in high winds.
