Hi Dave,

Well...a number of years ago I had a paddle the morning after having to work all night, so I took my then new CD Sirocco and put it on the roof of my car and took it to work with me. Had thunderstorms overnight and I never thougth about it. In the morning when I went to leave work had this large sloshing noise on the roof when I tried to drive away. That boat had the cockpit almost full to the coaming with water, luckly only in the cockpit, and I didn't have a pump. Had to bail it with a styrofoam coffee cup, took a little while (like 2 hours). The next day I ordered a cockpit cover and bought a bilge pump :)

Now all my kayaks, cept the Cobra (sit on top) have cockpit covers, keeps bugs out too, they most definately can fill with rain water in a surprisingly short amount of time. Might be different if you had a tiny ocean cockpit, but a standard keyhole cockpit is a very big hole, darned near 50% of the cockpit size.
