Pumping out is best understood if you've just been out practicing rolls in moderate waves, a little chop. Let's say you have a very stable Great Auk. Now you have an inch of water sliding around the cockpit.
That little water is very uncomfortable if it's cold out. It's also more destabilizing than you might imagine. So you stop, insert your stick pump in between you and your skirt. Whoops! you're upside down. Roll up.
You cannot brace and pump at the same time, you cannot paddle and pump at the same time. It's a hassle and a drag. After the dunking, you figure, aww I'll just put up with the water sloshing around. While you're paddling it's not too destabilizing.

My solution is to incorporate a Guzzler foot pump into a full foot brace. (see my link). School started for the year so my Mystery build, and full foot brace pump is on hold.
I think I owe to everyone and myself to follow through ASAP on this dingus to prove my concept, discover the problems, and tweak those.

An electric pump is easier to install, but you have to keep up on the maintenance.
I don't like stick pumps, but I have one in my kayak. We shouldn't have to let go of our paddle to pump, we have plenty of muscle in our legs.

I wouldn't put any time into anything with the stick pump, except practice in using it with a cockpit sloshing water.

Flckr has some 'new feature' that's blocking links to my photos. This is the mock up, a scale drawing of the Guzzler pump (if you want to design your own)
