: There is a program for the Iphone called Navionics Lakes North that
: is pretty interesting, but it does not give you instantaneous
: speed. It gives you your average overall trip speed. The useful
: thing about it is that it lays your track (a line) and has maps
: of some pretty obscure rivers and lakes. You can also generate a
: route and take photos pinned to your location. A really cool
: thing is that you can download your information into Google
: Earth and send it to people to share your route. It costs $9.95,
: but if the features are what you want, it is worth it. Make sure
: you choose the right area for you. You might want to call the
: company to ask them before you download possibly the wrong map.
: They appear to be aiming this more at motor boats.

: I would like to have an app that provides instantaneous speed. That
: would be very useful, so I would like to hear from anyone else.

It used to be available five to ten years ago for free - nothing fancy - even with a dull name like GPS Map or something like that. Incredibly simple and easy to use with "popcorns" showing the track you laid. Magnify the image, click on a "popcorn" and that very spot in time was given your speed and i think other pertinents. And again - free.

Somehow they devolved into thinking the info from the "popcorns" [a term used in gps vehicle tracking] was not needed and a simple line that blurs them altogether is best. What as mindless decision that was. Im looking to find where my peak speed was in a given tract of water under conditions that I know seperate from the GPS. I casnt access that. Something not right with that at all.

Id like to think Im overlooking it - but I cant find that to be true.
