In Response To: You forgot the best option... (Brian Nystrom)

: ...a jointer.

: I got the idea of using a jointer to taper blades from Gabriel
: Romeu years ago and it's by far the fastest, easiest way to go.
: All you do is elevate the loom end to the approximate angle of
: the taper and start making passes across the blades. As the
: material comes off, you'll see if you need to adjust the angle.
: I set the jointer to take a 1/32" cut, which allows a lot
: of control, but a 1/16" cut will remove material quickly,
: if you're in a hurry. Just remember to check the layout lines on
: both sides to make sure you're making even cuts across the width
: of the face. The end result is smooth, perfectly tapered blades.
: Once you get the technique down, you can do all four tapers in
: 10-15 minutes, total.

: Just remember: KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM THE BLADES! I use a push
: block on the end of the blade and hold the loom at the mid-point
: (or farther away), so my hands are never near the blades.

Similiar warning using a power plane, they can be seriously dangerous, I've lost an entire summer when I got caught doing something stupid. Luckily I still have use of all my fingers, but they tingle when I start any power tool now reminding me.
