I'm pretty new to wordworking tools. I've got a 7" block plane, a surform, palm sander, and access to circular and jigsaws. I don't mind buying more at all, but I'd prefer to keep costs relatively low unless it's multi-fuction. E.g., a power planer is something I'd pretty much never use apart from making paddles, and I probably won't make a lot of those.

No garage or basement, so I don't plan to get a table saw or other large tools.

Given those constraints, a jack plane or hand saw seem like the best options.

: The real question is what other options do you have? I agree if you
: have circular saw that would be better. I think you can do it
: with a skill saw but it's not going to be simple. That is a big
: cut for a skill saw. But if that is all you have, practice on
: some scrap till your sure you can, if you can. Too many people
: jump on their good stock for the first attempt and ruin it.

: Another option is a good handsaw. They are not overly expensive and
: will do an excellent job. But again, practice! I love hand tools
: but I am not good with that type of cut with a hand saw.
