The assumption with all commercially made kayaks is that the foot is slanted forward and contact is made at the ball of the foot. If someone has larger feet, they would just move the brace forward a bit. Most of the boats I have built, the screw holes have been right below the shear line and that is a nice place because of all the additional glass tape for strength on the shear line area.
